EXCLUSIVE: Witness Describes How Soldiers In Delta State Murdered Police Informant In Cold Blood

When the witness recounted Benson’s murder he said “I was right there. We started hearing gunshots. We came out and we saw by the mechanic workshop. Five military men came out of the vehicle and started giving orders and at that moment they beat him mercilessly. They treated him not as a human but as an animal. They shot him directly in his tummy. The guy was lying down lifeless on the ground

SaharaTV spoke exclusively with a witness to the brutal murder of Benson Ogedegbe by soldiers attached to the 19th Battalion stationed at Koko Military Base in Ethiope West Area, Delta State.  The witness asked SaharaTV to not use his name, for fear of retaliation from the military and criminals in the area; and his voice was altered so that he could not be recognized by the public.
It was learned earlier this week that Benson Ogedegbe, the local Chairman of the Oghara Vigilante Group, was gunned down in broad daylight by Lance Corporal Obinna of the 19th Battalion. The extrajudicial murder was ordered by his Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Aminu Umar, and he was accompanied by a Captain Femi and three other soldiers.
It is now known that Benson Ogedegbe was assassinated by members of the 19th Battalion because he was a police informant giving information on how Lt. Col. Umar and his men were working with notorious crime boss Onoriode “Onos” Okerhibo. The 19th Battalion had been making money off of Onos’s illicit activities in the area, and had been providing him with protection when he kidnapped for ransom, murdered Delta residents, jacked vehicles, and stole oil from the pipelines running through the Oghara area.
The unnamed witness told SaharaTV that “before now [Benson’s murder] there has been a lot of set up against him [Benson Ogedegbe] by the military. The military wanted was for him to be out of their way.” The witness was referring to how the military had been hunting for Benson in the weeks before his murder, though Benson evaded capture by hiding in the police station. The military had even arrested Benson’s eldest son to lure him out of hiding.
The guy was lying down lifeless on the ground.”
He added that “Benson Ogedegbe’s [death was] a clear execution, it’s not as if they wanted to arrest him or investigate him. I have seen a soldier arresting an armed man before and he wasn’t executed. How can someone that has no weapons fight four men?”
The witness also confirmed the relationship between Onoriode “Onos” Okerhibo, the local crime boss, and the 19th Battalion. He said the military had been working “with a notorious criminal [Onos] that is from Delta State.” He later added that the criminal is from Otumara Area of Delta State.
He also mentioned that the entire community knows about a “concentration camp” at the Koko Military base and urged SaharaTV and SaharaReporters to “send a reporter to investigate, they will see it for themselves.” Other sources have told SaharaTV and SaharaReporters that there are sometimes around 30 people held unlawfully in this camp at the military base.
When asked what was needed to restore the safety of the community in Etiope West, the witness told SaharaTV that “the military must be investigated especially the CO Umar,” he added that the only way to have justice is for an intervention from powerful figures in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria
Traders protest plan to transfer Boko Haram prisoners to Anambra

Traders protest plan to transfer Boko Haram prisoners to Anambra

Thousands of traders at the various markets in Awka, Anambra State capital, yesterday closed shops and staged protests across the major streets in the capital city over the alleged plan by the Federal Government to transfer Boko Haram prisoners to the prisons in Anambra. During the protest which started in the morning after the Saturday sanitation exercise, the traders of which included market women who carried placards marched through the Arthur Eze Avenue and down to the ever busy Regina Caeli Junction of the Awka to Onitsha Expressway, which was barricaded as they chanted solidarity songs and voiced their rejection of the alleged move by the federal government to move Boko Haram prisoners to Anambra. The traders who were led by the President of Awka Traders Association, Emeka Jude Agumadu, insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari jail the Boko Haram prisoners to the North, where they rightly belong. And as the protesters continued in their action, they created heavy traffic jam that lasted for several hours, before security agents stormed the Regina Caeli junction of the Awka to Onitsha Express Way Expressway, branshing guns and tear gar canisters apparently to frighten the protesters, who remained defiant until their leader directed them to clear from the Expressway and move towards the old Awka to Enugu road (Nnamdi Azikiwe Avenue) where the protest would continue. The protesters displayed anti Buhari placards bearing the inscriptions like, “Buhari, Anambra is not Borno State”, "Bring federal investment to Anambra State not Boko Haram", “We don't want Boko Haram prisoners in Anambra State". The restive traders urged Buhari to realise that their collective wish is to the effect that if he wants to help Anambra State that he( Buhari) should give Anambra ministerial positions, schools and other developmental projects, stressing that they don't want Boko Haram prisoners at all. Agumadu who spoke to the journalists at the Regina Caeli junction of the Awka to Onitsha Expressway, said they used their protest to send signal to Buhari to take the prisoners to another state. Agumadu stated that they have since sent their protest to the governor and that no market was opened for routine trading and other commercial activities throughout the state yesterday. Similar protests which were accompanied with markets closure, also took place in Onitsha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia among others and it started after the environmental sanitation exercise when the traders got to their respective markets to open for the days business, only to be told that all the markets were shut for the protest.

Mother and baby survive Colombia jungle plane crash

Maria Nelly Murillo arrives in Quibdo, Colombia. 24 June 2015
Ms Murillo suffered some injuries and burns but they were not believed to be serious
A young mother and her baby have been found alive five days after their plane crashed in the jungle of western Colombia.
A Colombian Air Force chief described their survival as "a miracle".
Maria Nelly Murillo, 18, and her one-year-old son were found by rescuers near to where their small Cessna plane crashed in Choco province.
Ms Murillo had some injuries and burns while her baby appeared to be in good health.
The twin-engine plane had been flying from Quibdo, the capital of Choco, to the town of Nuqui on the Pacific coast when it crashed in the Alto Baudo region on Saturday. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
Rescuers reached the plane on Monday and found the pilot, Carlos Mario Ceballos, dead in the cockpit.
But the doors of the plane were ajar and Ms Murillo and her baby, Yudier Moreno, were not there.
A 14-person team scoured the jungle for three days before finding them.
"It's a miracle. It is a very wild area and it was a catastrophic accident," Colonel Hector Carrascal of the Colombian Air Force told AFP news agency.
Of the baby, he said: "His mother's spirit must have given him strength to survive."
The couple were airlifted to a hospital in Quibdo.

Hate Crime Suspect Allegedly Stabbed Men for Wearing Skinny Jeans

On Tuesday, a California man was arrested on hate crimes charges after allegedly yelling homophobic slurs and attacking three men with a knife for wearing skinny jeans, the L.A. Times reports.
According to victim Blake Abbey, the men were walking home Sunday night when the suspect and another man called them “faggots for wearing tight jeans.” The suspect, later identified by Sacramento police as 25-year-old Timothy Brownell, then attacked Abbey and two of his friends with a knife, stabbing them several times.
“We did nothing to provoke them,” Abbey later wrote on Facebook. “My arm was completely mangled by a 7-8 inch Rambo knife.”
On Monday, the Sacramento Police Department said in a statement it has “zero tolerance for these crimes.”
Supporters of the victims have now organized an “I Wear Skinny Jeans” benefit concert for Abbey and his friends.

Kaduna to take over Japan-assisted project

Kaduna to take over Japan-assisted project

Kaduna State government has said it will take over the Japan-assisted N283 million Pampaida Millennium Village Project in Ikara Local Government Area, in December this year.
Finance and administrative manager of the project, Elisha Tanuna, who spoke on behalf of the management, told journalists yesterday in Kaduna that Governor Nasir el Rufai has visited the project and was impressed with how such an amount could be managed to transform the infrastructure of a poor rural community.
Tanuna explained that the project has raised about 30,000 villagers from crippling poverty by improving their wellbeing.
He said the Pampaida project has dramatically showed that a community of about 30,000 persons, which had no school, primary health care and good maternal mortality rate, among others, could actually be transformed into a modern community where all these services could be made available.
Tanuna said: “When in May 2006, Professor Jeffrey Sachsin, Director, Earth Institute, Columbia University, who is also special adviser to the United Nations on Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, and the late Governor of Kaduna State, Patrick Yakowa, flagged off the project, many people were not sure if what was promised would be achieved.
“Today, we are happy to say that with the financial assistance of Japanese government, which donated about $1.28 million, we have been able to show it is possible to actually make MDG model villages in which the poorest of communities live, to lift themselves out of poverty, improve their hygiene and sanitation, get educated and meet MDGs’ targets when supported with $100 per capita over a period of five years.
“We will be handing over the Pampaida MVP to Kaduna State government to be managed by Ikara Local Government Council in December to serve as a model to be used in transforming the entire council area.
According to him, the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, has praised the project concept, saying: “These programmes are all pragmatic, result-oriented and scaled to the real needs of real people. And this is only the beginning. Today, I call on every country to look closely at this success. It is a case study of what is possible, even in the poorest places of the world.”
Perhaps, to show his endorsement of the staff of the project, el Rufai last week appointed Dr. Clement Woje, who headed the multi-sector Pampaida MVP, as director general of Kaduna State Rural Development Projects in the Office of Kaduna State Deputy Governor.

According to Radar Online, the 13 year old youngest son of the late pop King has changed his name from Blanket Jackson to Bigi Jackson after enduring years of painful bullying.

He reportedly resented his father for giving him the name Blanket that became the butt of jokes to his peers for years.

Born Michael Jackson Jr., the 13-year-old, who is just completing 7th grade at The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California, “changed his name informally from Blanket to Bigi before entering Buckley because he hated getting bullied  and made fun of because his name was Blanket,” an insider told Radar.

Kim & Kanye made sure their next chid was a boy by only choosing male embryos

According to reports, a source claimed that Kim and Kanye made sure their new baby was a boy by choosing only male embryos.

From Us Magazine

Reality star Kim Kardashian, 34, and husband Kanye West underwent an IVF gender-selection process this spring to predetermine baby No. 2’s sex. "She only had boy embryos implanted,” says a source close to Kardashian, who confirmed the gender on Monday June 21, after Us Weekly broke the news. During the procedure — which can start at roughly $17,000 — doctors isolate fertilized embryos of the preferred sex in a lab, then transfer them to a uterus.
“Kanye and Kim are so excited to complete their family,” says another source of the parents of daughter North, 2. “Kanye loves Nori more than anything, but to make his world complete, he wanted a little boy, an heir,” says a source close to West.

The Inspector General of Police (IG), Solomon Arase, has said he has immediately deployed highway patrol vehicles to fill in the vacuum created with the Monday’s presidential order for dismantling of military roadblocks on highways in the country.

Arase made this known yesterday during a one-day stakeholders consultative forum on improving police response to sexual and gender-based violence and gender mainstreaming,  where he disclosed that in addition to over 300 patrol vehicles recently deployed to the roads, another 157 highway patrol vehicles are ready for deployment on the roads.

The police boss who submitted that the police would need the prompt collaboration of the public to prevent crimes and criminality, however, affirmed that the Nigerian military could still be called upon to assist in security whenever the need arises.

He noted that the police had already taken strides to ensure that the force protects the interest of their female folks and improved response time to gender and sexual violence.

According to him, one of the repugnant policies he found in the police was the law which said a female officer could only marry after she had served a number of years in the force while their male counterparts could get married right from the police college.

He affirmed that steps were being taken to correct all such anomalies.

“If the men can marry from the police training schools, why can’t the women?” he queried.

In her remarks, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and gender adviser, ACP Olabisi Kolawole, stressed that the creation of the gender unit of the force has inspired female police personnel to equally aspire to great heights along with their male counterparts.

She called on stakeholders in gender issues to rally round the police force in terms of capacity building for personnel deployed to the office and provision of the necessary tools for efficiency
The Executive Director, CLEEN Foundation, an NGO with particular interest in police growth and development, Mrs. Kemi Okenyodo, in her remarks, applauded the police for the giant strides in the area of gender equity in the force.

APC senators in physical combat over sharing of principal offices

APC senators in physical combat over sharing of principal offices

Lol. According to a report by Vanguard, some APC senators physically fought each other today over the selection of principal officers for the Senate. Read the report below...
The crisis rocking the APC over selection of principal officers Tuesday deepened as the meeting of the caucus members of the party in the upper chambers ended in deadlock. At the meeting of the APC senators to address the problem, some senators engaged in physical combat thereby bringing the meeting to an abrupt end. At resumed plenary, Senate President Bukola Saraki had after adjournment announced that a meeting of the APC caucus was fixed for 2:00pm. According to a source, the meeting which was the first time the two camps (Saraki and Lawan) would agree to a meeting after Saraki edged out Ahmad Lawan in the race for the Senate presidency. The meeting was held behind close door in meeting room 3: 01 and had about 40 APC Senators in attendance.
At the meeting, Senator Danjuma Goje, Gombe Central led the group loyal to Saraki on one side, while Senator Barnabas Gemade, Benue North East led the group loyal to Lawan.

A source told Vanguard that the position of Saraki’s group was that candidates must emerge through an electoral process, the four favoured zonal caucuses should meet, conduct elections at zonal levels, then communicate winners of such elections to the Senate President and that once the zonal caucuses conclude their elections by the end of Tuesday, the Senate President would announce those to fill the posts at Wednesday plenary.

The Unity Forum which supported Lawan were opposed to it as they insisted that the names nominated by the APC leadership to take the positions be adhered to.

There was a melodrama when Senator Kabir Marafa, Zamfara Central, pushed and attacked Senator Tayo Alasoadura, Ondo Central for daring to challenge the decision of the party. Alasoadura was saved by the timely intervention of Senator Rafiu Ibrahim (Kwara) who held Marafa firmly and prevented him from hitting at his target.

Other Senators also joined in saving the ugly situation even as rains of abusive words intensified from all angles in different languages.
Ex-militants beg Buhari to sustain amnesty

Ex-militants beg Buhari to sustain amnesty

Niger-Delta ex-militants on arrival at the Murtala Murtala International Airport Lagos
Some ex-militants have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sustain the amnesty programme beyond 2015.
The call came just as the Buhari-led Federal Government ended the pipeline surveillance contracts given to ethnic militias such as the Oodua Peoples’ Congress and ex-Niger-Delta militants.
The amnesty programme, which was initiated by the administration of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, started in 2009 and was supposed to end this year.
Buhari had also stated that the programme, which had gulped billions of dollars, would stop when due but promised to continue to develop the Niger Delta.
However, an ex-militant leader, Ramsey Oyakemeagbegha, while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, said it was not yet time to stop the amnesty programme.
Oyakemeagbegha, who benefitted from the third phase of the amnesty programme, stressed the need for the extension to enable the government address the challenges and the neglect that necessitated the amnesty.
He said that ending the programme in 2015 would not benefit the ex-militants that embraced the amnesty programme in the third phase in 2013.
He said, “We, in the third phase amnesty programme, are also of the view that the programme should continue and not stop in 2015 as scheduled. So, I urge the Federal Government to review the schedule.
“The third phase came in not too long ago. Even for those who started in the first phase there is not much on the ground to engage them meaningfully.
“The communities are still largely underdeveloped and most of the things that triggered militancy are not attended to as expected.”
Oyakemeagbegha added that the people had yet to access potable water, good education and functional health facilities.
According to him, pollution occasioned by the oil industry still continues in addition to unemployment in the land.
“In the light of the above, making 2015 the end of the Presidential Amnesty Programme spells more trouble for our region and the nation.”
Meanwhile, Buhari on Monday, ordered men of the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Army to protect pipelines across Lagos State and other strategic areas of the country.
However, a former Niger Delta militant, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, said he and his men had not been paid as promised.
Asari-Dokubo said Buhari must pay the ex-militants because the surveillance contract was given to them legitimately by the Federal Government led by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Asari-Dokubo explained that the contract, which was given to them by Jonathan shortly before the last elections, was for three months and it elapsed on June 15.
He said that the ex-minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, did not sign for the payment of the pipeline surveillance contract before she left office.
The pipeline protection project, which cuts across Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta States, was executed from March 15, 2015 to June 15.
Asari-Dokubo urged President Buhari to pay the contractors their money if he was truly committed to the rule of law.
He said, “If Buhari is law-abiding and if his government respects the rule of law, the contractual obligations will be followed. The contract was awarded to corporate entities by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. We did not go in as individuals and the corporate entities are regarded as individuals under the law. No contract was awarded to any specific individual.”
When contacted on the telephone, the National Coordinator of the OPC, Mr. Gani Adams, told our correspondent that he and his men had not been paid by the Federal Government.
Adams said he was confident of getting his money.
“The contract was meant to last for three months and it has now ended. We have not been paid but I am working on getting the money. It was you people in PUNCH that kept on making noise about the issue.
“Pipeline contract is not a big deal. We in the OPC had been spending as much as N700m a year on our various operations. How much was the pipeline contract?” he said.

Tips for Mastering the Art of Pastel Makeup

Tips for Mastering the Art of Pastel Makeup

IMAGE: IMAXTREE
While a bold lip is a summer favorite when it comes to makeup, a pastel palette is equally fun and statement-making. Soft shades of lilac, rose and dusty blue can make for a romantic and sophisticated look or a feminine and youthful effect. Either way, it’s a great way to play with makeup and flex your artistry skills. The best place to start with pastel makeup is the eyes — it’s also the most flattering placement since the muted shades can enhance the eyes. To master your pastel makeup, Chantecaille global makeup artist Fernando Cadavid breaks down nine tips for a gorgeous look.
  1. Pick a color that will best suit your eye color. Soft lilacs for hazel eyes, pinks and soft orange shades for blue eyes, greens and blues for brown eyes, plums and burnt yellows for green eyes.
  2. “It’s important to always keep your canvas (your face) fresh, sheer and softly set with a dewy finish. Avoid bronzers or strong contouring products,” says Cadavid. For warmer months, a lightweight base likeChantecaille Just Skin Tinted Moisturizer will give you the best finish.
  3. While it’s a good idea to skip a thick line of black eyeliner to avoid looking overdone, it’s still important to define the eye area. “To avoid looking washed out with pastels, define your lash line by using a deeper color eyeliner than the shadow you are using, paired with a couple coats of mascara.”
  4. Frame the eyes with a well-groomed brow, this will help keep the focus on the eyeshadow. Cadavid advises using a brow gel to help with this.
  5. When it comes to color selection, less is more. Cadavid says, “Keep it simple by selecting one eyeshadow shade and apply it by brushing the color on beginning at the lash line and diffusing it upward, covering three-quarters of the eyelid.” Make sure to blend it well and don’t forget the inner and outer corners.
  6. “Most pastel eyeshadows tend to be matte. A great tip to give lids soft depth and dimension is to also use a sheer, translucent, highlighting eyeshadow only at the crease of the lid from inner to outer corner at the lid contour,” says Cadavid.
  7. Cadavid also has a simple trick to allow colors to pop just as beautifully on dark skin tones: “To help intensify the color, use foundation on the lid and set with a sheer white eyeshadow. This will create a base before your color of choice gets applied.”
  8. To really step up your pastel makeup, Cadavid says to go for a graphic application of your eyeliner: “Use a wet eyeliner brush and a darker pastel shade or a light metallic eyeshadow.”
  9. “Blush should be very, very light and sheer since the overall look should be kept soft and diffused,” says Cadavid. Same goes for lips — use a sheer lip color or a balm with a subtle tint.
