6 Nigerians Reportedly Die & 4 Go Missing in Mecca Mosque Crane Accident

six Nigerian pilgrims have been confirmed dead while four have been declared missing in the crane accident which took place in a Mosque in Kaabah, Mecca, Saudi Arabia on Friday. The deceased, it was learnt on Sunday, had been buried in Saudi Arabia.
The spokesperson for National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Uba Mana, confirmed the death of the six Nigerians in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Sunday.
He said, “There are six Nigerians that lost their lives; in Islam, you don’t bring corpses back home. You bury them where they died. Preparations are on the way for their burial as I speak with you now. But I’m sure they will be buried here (Saudi Arabia).”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also reported on Sunday that four female pilgrims from Gombe State had been declared  missing following the crash. One other female pilgrim got injured during the incident.
The State Amirul-Hajj, Alhaji Abdullahi Mai-Kano, disclosed this while sympathising with the state pilgrims in Mecca over the mishap on Sunday.
Mai-Kano said that the four pilgrims were from Akko, Dukku and Nafada local governments areas of the state.
He said the other faithful sustained injury on her head, but had been treated and discharged.
He said the four pilgrims were declared missing after a thorough verification and bed checking in the three houses accommodating the state pilgrims. The hajj commission had on Saturday said that while three Nigerians were injured in the crane crash, no Nigerian was among the dead.
NAHCON had however stated that investigations by the Nigerian medical team and the Saudi authorities “are still ongoing on the matter.”
Mana had said, “For now, no Nigerian has been confirmed to be among the dead. But three Nigerians are believed to have been injured. Investigations by the Saudi authorities and our medical personnel are still ongoing, but not concluded. Our medical personnel are visiting hospitals to find out if there are Nigerian casualties. But so far, no Nigerian is among the dead.
The incident won’t affect pilgrimage because airlifting is ongoing. We have already airlifted over 80 per cent of our pilgrims. We don’t intend to stop, people are not scared. We have told our people to be cautious and observe what to do to protect themselves.”
NAN correspondents recall that the crane that was being used for the expansion of the grand mosque crashed killing many pilgrims with several others sustained varying degrees of injury.
Apprehension was experienced at home on whether Nigerian pilgrims were involved.
But the government of Saudi Arabia had said they of identifying the victims before their burial.
They promised to contact all countries that might have lost any of her citizens in the crane accident.
While an investigative committee was said to have commenced searching for the cause of the collapse of the crane, a former Head of Mecca’s religious police, Sheikh Ahmed al-Ghandi, was said to have attributed the accident to an act of God.
Members of the Nigerian Armed Forces on Holy pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia were said to have extended medical treatment to other Nigerian pilgrims in Mecca.
The Director of Islamic Affairs in Nigerian Army, Col. Shehu Garba Mustapha, was reported to have said that it was part of their training that anywhere they find themselves, they must protect Nigerians.
Mustapha who is also the leader of the Armed Forces delegation to Saudi Arabia had said, 400 Armed Forces officers and personnel, including their families were in Saudi Arabia for the 2015 Hajj exercise

Buhari, Osinbajo to take 50% pay cut — Presidency

Buhari, Osinbajo to take 50% pay cut — Presidency

President Muhammadu Buhari will take only half of the salary paid to former head of state Goodluck Jonathan, his office announced on Friday.
“President Muhammadu Buhari will only receive 50 percent of the salary paid to his predecessor,” the head of state’s spokesman Garba Shehu said in an emailed statement.
“The president’s decision to take a 50 percent cut was conveyed to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation yesterday (Thursday),” he added.
The annual salary of Nigeria’s president is currently set at 14,058,820 naira ($70,000, 63,500 euros), including allowances, according to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
Shehu said Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo would also draw only half of his salary of 12,126,290 naira per annum.
The announcement comes as Africa’s leading economy faces the fall-out from the slump in the global price of crude oil, which provides most of Nigeria’s government revenue, and a public outcry over the remuneration of lawmakers.
His move is likely to add pressure on members of parliament and state governors to follow suit.
This week Buhari approved a package of measures to bail out cash-strapped states to enable them to pay public sector workers, some of whom have not received salaries since the end of last year.
Buhari has accused Jonathan’s government of leaving the treasury “virtually empty” while figures showed debts totalling some $63.5 billion at the end of March.
The 72-year-old is unusual among Nigerian politicians for eschewing the trappings of power and has earned a reputation for austerity, with apparently little personal wealth.
The former military ruler was said to have had to take out a bank loan to pay the fee to stand in his party’s presidential primaries.
Buhari defeated Jonathan in March elections — the first democratic transfer of power at the ballot box between political parties in Nigeria’s history

8 BURNT TO DEATH AS BUS CATCHES FIRE ON ABUJA-LOKOJA ROAD

8 BURNT TO DEATH AS BUS CATCHES FIRE ON ABUJA-LOKOJA ROAD

Eight persons were burnt to death in a commercial bus that caught fire last week at Omoko village, on the Abuja-Lokoja expressway.
Our reporter learnt that 13 other passengers, four female and nine male, who sustained various degrees of burns, were taken to the hospital.
A witness said the incident happened around 12:30 p.m. after the driver of an unmarked commuter bus lost control and plunged into a ditch while on speed.
He said the bus driver veered off the road after a tyre burst and it crashed into a ditch, catching fire instantly.
“Only 13 out of the 21 passengers on board could be rescued due to the flames, while eight other passengers including the driver were trapped and burnt beyond recognition,” he said.
When contacted, the Abaji unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Assistant Corps Commander, Moses A. Audu, confirmed the incident and attributed it to tyre burst and over speeding.
He said 21 passengers were in the bus, while eight persons including the driver were burnt beyond recognition and 13 others escaped with various degrees of burns.
He said five of the passengers, who suffered burns were taken to Abaji General Hospital, while another five were taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital at Gwagwalada, and the remaining three taken to Rhema Foundation Hospital at Kwali.
“The eight passengers that were burnt to death were later buried at the scene through the combined effort of policemen from Chikara division after some relatives came,” he said.
When City News reporter visited Rhema Hospital at Kwali on Sunday, a nurse said that the three victims were later referred to Abuja National Hospital, due to the high degree of injuries they sustained.
In a similar incident, four persons were injured in another motor accident on Saturday morning at Gada-Biyu village, on the Abuja-Lokoja expressway.
A witness said the accident happened around 6:23 a.m. when a J5 Peugeot bus with registration number XC 385 WDL veered off the road and crashed into a ditch after a tyre burst.
He said those injured were rescued by sympathisers and were taken to Abaji General Hospital for attention.
The Abaji unit commander of the FRSC, Moses Audu, confirmed the accident, saying the victims were rescued by his men at the scene and attributed the accident to over speeding and tyre burst.

Hottest topics at Merkel’s G7 summit

Hottest topics at Merkel’s G7 summit

President Barack Obama arrived in southern Germany early Sunday for a G7 summit that is set to be overshadowed by tensions over Greece’s debt crisis and flaring violence in Ukraine.
Air Force One touched down in Munich just after 0415 GMT, where Obama was welcomed by locals in traditional dress ahead of a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that will feature Bavarian beer, pretzels and oompah music.
Greek debt turmoil and a flare-up in fighting in Ukraine are sure to command a large share of the attention at the Group of Seven summit in Germany starting Sunday.
But German Chancellor Angela Merkel has asked her fellow leaders in the club of rich nations to look beyond immediate crises to other major issues affecting the world’s population.
Here is an overview of Merkel’s to-do list for the two-day gathering at Elmau Castle in the Bavarian Alps.
– CLIMATE –
Creating a united front among seven leading industrialised nations on fighting climate change is the “absolute priority” for Merkel, her advisors say.
The aim is to send a clear message ahead of a drive toward a global agreement in December at a UN conference in Paris committing nations to reduce dangerous greenhouse gas emissions.
Observers will be looking closely for an indication as to what extent the nations are prepared to pursue “decarbonisation”, meaning a dramatic reduction in their use of fossil fuels.
However, analysts say that even if the G7’s European members — Britain, France, Germany and Italy — appear ready to rally behind an ambitious formulation in the final summit communique renouncing the use of fossil fuels in electricity production from 2050, for example, Canada, Japan and the United States are unlikely to follow suit.
– PUBLIC HEALTH –
The German presidency wants the G7 to unite behind a plan to fight global pandemics as laid out by the World Bank, and to advance research into Ebola.
Resistance to antibiotics is also on the agenda, including proposals inspired by World Health Organization recommendations to check over-prescribing of antibiotics and define more narrow criteria for their use in humans as well as animals.
Germany has also set its sights on “neglected” tropical diseases, the killer scourges to which pharmaceutical companies commit few resources.
– SAFETY AT WORK –
As always, international commerce, including proposed sweeping free deals, will figure high on the G7 agenda, but the focus this time will also include global standards on labour.
The summit is expected to sign off on the creation of a “Vision Zero Fund” to ensure compliance with safety standards as outlined by the International Labour Organization.
The aim is to prevent disasters such as the building collapse at Bangladesh’s Rana Plaza factory complex, which killed more than 1,100 people in 2013.
– FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER –
The G7 plans to set a new target to pull 500 million people out of hunger and malnutrition among the two billion people around the world currently afflicted.
The debate, touched off by Merkel at Elmau Castle, is intended to help prepare for a UN conference in Addis Ababa next month on financing for development.
– WOMEN –
Germany is the only G7 country led by a woman and Merkel has put improving education and training for girls and women and more opportunities for female executives high on her agenda.
On the education issue, “we will attempt to get as many concrete commitments as possible” from developing countries, a source in Berlin said.
pkg virginia bank robbery suspect instagram_00005707.jpg
And to increase opportunities for women, Germany will press the G7 members to sign on to principles to advance the cause of businesswomen, includin easier financing for female-owned firms.
