Africa Cup 1C: Nigeria to play Zimbabwe, Zambia

Nigeria rugby 15s team, the Black Stallions, will play the Zimbabwe and Zambia in Africa Cup 1C slated for June 21 to 27 at the Lusaka Rugby Club in Zambia.

The Stallions failed to gain promotion from the group last year in Botswana. They will play Zambia on June 21 before taking on Zimbabwe on June 24.

According to the official website of Rugby Africa, the winner of the three-team tournament will earn a promotion to the Africa Cup 1B, which is the penultimate group to the elite Cup 1A on the continent.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation has released a list of 23 players for the tournament.

The list, which was released on Thursday, was made up of two overseas-based players and 21 home-based players.

According to the NRFF vice president, Olatunji Fasimoye, the team will commence on a training tour of the host country – Zambia – next week to prepare for the tournament.

Fasimoye told The Punch, “Qualification for the Cup 1B is a target for this board of the NRFF and we will do all it takes within our power to achieve it with the team.

“We are excited to name this squad which allows us to look at a wide group of players who have been pushing hard for selection through their performance in the various leagues.

Police arrest five ritualists in Ondo

FIVE suspected ritualists have been arrested at a shrine where abducted persons are slaughtered and their parts sold to prospective buyers at Ago Oyinbo in Okitipupa area of Ondo State.

Consequently, upon discovery of the kidnappers den, youths in the town stormed the place and demolished it.

Vanguard gathered that the suspects were arrested, following a tip-off by people of the community, who noticed strange movements and stench oozing out of the building.

The human slaughter house and some of the fetish materials therein.

Men of Igbotako Police division reportedly effected the arrest of the suspects.

Before their arrest, the suspects were alleged to have been occupying the building in the last three years.

Sources informed newsmen that the suspected ritualists, after kidnapping their victims, usually take them to the shrine and slaughtered them for ritual purposes.

The said shrine is located in the village which is a few kilometres away from Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode expressway.

Fetish materials such as cow horns, different types of clothes suspected to belong to those abducted, palm fronds, bottles of gin, calabashes, ‘Ghana must go’ bags, among others, were found at the shrine.

The Baale of Ago Oyinbo, Chief Moyebi Okeowo, who spoke to newsmen, said the shrine must have been erected in 2012 when the suspects came to beg for a space in the village to use as location to shoot films.

He said: “I asked somebody to take them to the owner of the land, unknown to him that they wanted to use the village as a kidnappers den.

“When they came to me to beg for a piece of land to shoot their film, I told them I am not the owner of the land and I took them to the brother of the landlord of the land who took them to the wife of the landlord in Akure.

‘I learned they were authorized by the wife of the landlord to use the land and since then, they have been using it.

“When I did not know what they were using the land for, I told their leader to go and report their activities to the police and he later informed me that he had done so.”

Okeowo explained that he was not aware of the activities of the suspects until last Monday when he got information that the suspects were using human beings for sacrifice on the land.

Also, the Principal of Community Grammar School in neighbouring Kajola, in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, Mr Joseph Edosama, said two of the security guards of the school were among the suspects arrested by the police for conspiring with the suspected kidnappers.

Another community leader, who spoke in confidence, explained that it had been long since the suspects started operating in the village.

But the state police spokesman, Wole Ogodo, feigned ignorance of the development in the community, saying the state command had not been briefed by its Divisional police station at Igbotako.

Chaos as police, thugs, attack protesting Enugu hospital workers

THE peaceful pro-test organized by the striking workers of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, New Haven, Enugu, over the non-payment of their entitlements and the alleged maltreatment of the workers, turned bloody Thursday morning as some thugs allegedly invited by the hospital’s management attacked the workers with axes and other dangerous weapons.

The Chairman of the Joint Health Sector Union, JOHESU, Mr. Alozie Ejimmadu, sustained injuries on the head and was rushed to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla, where doctors are now battling to save his life.

A management staff who was armed with a sharp axe, allegedly inflicted on the union leader a deep cut on the head at the gate of the hospital where the union leader and other aggrieved workers had converged at about 8 am for the peaceful protest. As a result, medical activities in the hospital were paralyzed as workers, patients and visitors were denied access into the hospital for several hours.

The labour leaders said the strike action which would be called off only when their demands were met by the Dr. Onwukwe-led management, advised people to stay away from the hospital as no service would be rendered during the period of the strike. Some of their placards read: “Pay us our teaching allowance, 2014/2015 increment allowance”, “Give us our due promotions and conversions”, “Our President listen to our cries, and “Stop bribery for second tenure” .

However, the protest by the aggrieved workers, became violent as the thugs brought in by a teaching staff of the hospital, descended on them. A team of policemen from Abakpa Area command led by the Area Commander, Mark Igwe, and a team of Department of State Service, DSS, operatives, later arrived the scene and advised the protesting workers to eschew violence in their agitations. But when the Divisional Police Officer for New Haven, Enugu drove to the hospital in a patrol van, he ordered the workers to leave the premises immediately. When they refused to disperse, the DPO and the thugs forcefully pushed them from the hospital’s gate.

The police officer released some shots as the thugs and some policemen from his Division pursued some of the workers in a bid to arrest them. The Area Commander had advised the protesters to channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters in a peaceful manner, saying “If you want to embark on strike you must conduct yourselves peacefully and avoid taking the laws into your hands.”

He asked them to allow patients free access into the hospital, but the DPO, who was not satisfied by the Area Commander’s directive, pushed them out of the hospital premises.

The labour leaders, who spoke on their grievances, complained that they were being victimized for demanding their legitimate entitlements, pointing out that after meeting with the management on the various contentious issues, nothing was done to address them hence their decision to embark on strike.

Comrade Mathias Okonkwo, the state chairman, Joint Trade Union, Enugu State, who led the protest, told newsmen that “the management of this hospital has been intimidating and victimizing labour leaders because they told them to pay their entitlements and allowances.”

3 Nursing School Students Gang-Rape 6 Year Old Girl In Benin

Three final year Nursing Students of Edo State School of Nursing, have reportedly gang-raped a six-year old girl in Benin. Already, the police have arrested two of the students while the third suspect in crime is said to have absconded.

The suspects had allegedly committed the crime after luring the little girl from a makeshift store within the school hostel, while her mother was away.

Mother of the victim was said to have discovered the defilement of her daughter following
complaints of stomach pain, just as she was said to have also stooled and urinated profusely. Following the discovery, the victim’s mother promptly reported the incident at the Aideyan police division, which led to the arrest of the two students, while the third suspect allegedly absconded.

Besides, the incident was also reported to the Principal of the school and the Edo State Commissioner for Health.

PMNews reports that a source close to the family of the victim told journalists in Benin that the the girl is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility.

“The little girl said that when they (suspects) took her there (hostel), they tied her hands and mouth. But she was able to identify the three of them,” the source said.

Principal of the school, Mabel Omobude, who confirmed the case while speaking to journalists on phone, said the case has been reported to relevant authorities for further investigation.

“Yes, we are aware. The case was reported to the Director of Nursing Services. The Commissioner of Health is aware. She wrote a letter to the Commissioner of Health which was sent to my director to investigate. That was just Thursday and we have started our own investigation,” she said on telephone.

Also commenting on the incident, the Coordinator of Child Protection Network, Ms. Jennifer Ero, while calling for stiff penalties for the suspects, noted that the mother of the girl had been subjected to intimidation for reporting the case.

“Because she owns a shop there (in the school hostel), they are threatening to eject her because she went to the public with what happened. They want her to keep silent over it,” Ero said.

Benitez is 99% Certain To Join Madrid''

Carlo Ancelotti's agent Ernesto Bronzetti says Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is "99 per cent certain" to take over at Real Madrid.

The La Liga club announced the sacking of the Italian on Monday and also confirmed they would unveil his successor next week.

Madrid president Florentino Perez refused to shed any more light on Ancelotti's potential replacement but admitted a Spanish speaking coach would be his preference.

Goal revealed last week that Benitez is top of the club's shortlist and it appears only to be a matter of time before Benitez is appointed at the Bernabeu.

"Rafa Benitez is 99% certain to take charge of Real Madrid," Bronzetti told Rai Sport.

Regarding the former AC Milan boss' dismissal, he added: "Ancelotti wants to take a year off. The team was concerned at the news and some of the players cried when he announce his departure."

Benitez won the Coppa Italia last season but has failed to mount a serious title challenge in Naples this term, with his side set to finish in a disappointing fourth spot.

Jim Iyke has never had it easy with the womenfolk. Most issues he has had with them he never bargained for. Just like last Monday, the actor was doing the regular thing everyone would do after meeting with who you consider your favourite governor in Nigeria. He posted a picture of himself with Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, with catchy captions to show how much he respects the governor for his wonderful achievements in his state.

Real Madrid make Van Persie enquiry

EXCLUSIVE: The Dutchman has endured a difficult season at Old Trafford and the club will listen to offers for him in the summer, with the Spanish giants showing an interest

Real Madrid have made an enquiry regarding the availability of Robin van Persie this summer, Goal has learned.

The Spanish giants, knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage this week by Juventus, have been talking with Manchester United about the future of Javier Hernandez, the Mexican forward who has been on loan at the Santiago Bernabeu this campaign.

United are keen to offload Hernandez on a permanent basis for a fee, though it is looking increasingly unlikely that he will remain with Madrid into next season.

That has prompted the Spanish club to consider their options as they look to strengthen their forward options alongside Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo - and Van Persie’s name has come up in discussions.

The Dutchman has made a total of 25 appearances for United this term, scoring 10 goals. But despite lofty expectations upon Louis van Gaal’s takeover at Old Trafford last summer, he has failed to establish himself as his countryman’s key striker.

He will also be a free agent in the summer of 2016 with just one year left on his current deal, though as that amounts to nearly €16.5m, Madri and United may need to come to an agreement to settle Van Persie’s outstanding earnings if any move comes to fruition.

It is thought United would be willing to make a significant contribution to his final year’s wages by way of a pay-off to smooth his exit from the club, while Real are attracted by the idea of taking a quality striker who could provide formidable striking cover or even challenge Benzema for a starting position, form and fitness depending.

United are increasingly unlikely to retain Radamel Falcao’s services next season after a disappointing debut Premier League season and have already identified Harry Kane as a key summer target to replace the misfiring Colombia international, though Tottenham insist he is not for sale.

Is it time to find an ‘Oyinbo’ coach for Nigeria's youth teams?

This is an undisputable football fact; Nigeria has the best youth programme in the world of football. We have won four FIFA U16/17 tournaments and we have placed second (twice) and third in the U20. So why are we finding it difficult to field a competitive Super Eagles team when we have such good competitive teams at the youth levels?

The answer by many football analysts is that these youth players flame out by the time they are ready for the Super Eagles because they were not of the proper age when they played in FIFA youth tournaments.

Another well used reason is that we do not have a continuity programme; many feel that the teams should be ‘shepherded’ along from U17 to U20 to U23 till Super Eagles for us to see results. 

I cannot fault these reasons but I will ask this question; why do many of these same players who play for us at this level never really become good players even when they go play for clubs in Europe? They never become that great player we saw at seventeen; but I do have an interesting reason or in new sports language, I have a take on this issue.

Every time we have won the U17, there are always great expectations that we would win the U20 in the next go around, but this is yet to happen. The three previous U17 wins were followed by U20 teams that did not even finish in the last four. Maybe that is where the continuity argument holds, but not so for me.

I believe the problem is our lack of good coaching at this level; this is the level where all basic football knowledge is acquired. The use of sophisticated methods, drills and management are applied at this level and the results following our U17 success says that the teams are tactically unprepared and therefore out-played. The advantage we gain by using players over 17 in the U17s is nullified at the U20s, because boys of age 19/20 or men of 23/25 are physically the same, they are all in their physical prime.

We won the last U17 in 2013, we are playing in the U20 later this month, we are all very hopeful about this U20 team. Many are dreaming of the cup coming back to Nigeria, and I hope it does come to Nigeria. But if we fail as our records have shown, then I will be advocating for a foreign coach at this level and not at the Super Eagles level. This is where I believe we need help, real modern day football expertise, our players need this. They need it for their own football development and for a better Super Eagles. 

There is a reason the present football federation is seeking Nigerians born and footballers bred outside our shores for the Super Eagles, there is a reason that the federation instituted a committee to find our young players at home and send them to foreign academies, the reason is that we don’t breed our young players the right or modern way. Our coaches are behind in the grooming of young players. We all witnessed the federation’s absurd suggestion to Keshi and his crew to go and get some coaching education and see how quickly it was rejected or ignored. The simple truth is that our coaches need sound and modern education in the field of player development and the U17 and U20 teams will be better served for now with an Oyinbocoach. 

An Oyinbo coach at this level for us should be young, vibrant, full of ideas and cheap. He must come with an academy background from Europe and must have the ability to retain access to his academy so he/we can tap into their complete package of modern day football resources.

I’m happy to remarry again, says Oshiomhole

It was glitz and glamour as Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, yesterday, exchanged marital vows with his heartthrob, former Miss Iara Fortes, from Cape Verde.

The Governor and his bride had signed the dotted lines at a private marriage registry attended only by family members and a few friends at his Iyamho residence after which top dignitaries in the country, were led by the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari to the wedding reception held at the People’s White Hall in the Governor’s country home.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole slips puts a ring on the finger of fomer Miss Iara Fortes at a private marriage registry at Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, on Friday.

Among a list of who-is-who in the country who also graced the ceremony were President-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, his wife Aisha, Vice President Elect, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, Speaker of the House of Reps, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, Cross Rivers State Governor, Liyel Imoke, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Dr Samuel Ogbemudia, Peter Obi, former head of state, Gen. Yakubu Godwin, Alike Dangote, Captain Hosa Okunbor, Femi Otedola, Chief Tom Ikimi, Gen. Charles Airiavbere, Engr.Chris Ogiemwonyi, Saraki, Minority Whip of the House of Reps, Samson Osagie, Pally Iriase and many other members of the National Assembly.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, former Governors Kayode Fayemi, Oserheimen Osunbor, Senator Tunde Ogbeha; Osaigbovo Ogbemudia,Otunba Niyi Adebayo were also in attendance.

Top military brass including Brigadier-General MJ Abel, Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Auchi were also in attendance. The Director-General of the State Security was represented by Engr Joseph oworuya, while Mr Bello Bakori, Director, SSS Edo State was also at the ceremony.

Members of the Edo state Executive Council were led by the Deputy Governor of the state, Dr Pius Odubu, Chief Judge of Edo state, elected members of the State and National Assemblies and many others.

Parents of the bride, Mr and Mrs Fortes flew in from their home in the Netherlands to attend the ceremony while the Governor’s mother, Hajia Aishetu Oshiomhole was also in attendance.

The Governor’s children Steve, Adams, Jane and two of his grandchildren also on hand to show love and support for their father and his wife.

The Governor’s marriage is coming about five years after the painful death of his first wife, Clara Oshiomhole, following a protracted battle with cancer.

The delectable Iara, a lawyer by profession and top model, is from the Cape Verde Islands.

The chairman of the ceremony, General Yakubu Gowon said the Governor’s wife completes and complements him and he admonished the couple to show true love and have patience in their dealings with one another.

Fielding question form newsmen, Oshiomhole who noted that both PDP and APC leaders attended the wedding, said it shows that despite political differences, Nigerians remains one.

He described his wife as very “ understanding, caring and a loving lady and also expressed joy with his family for the support given to him to remarry.

“This is something that one is happy about. I am also happy that I have friends across all political divide. The occasion reminds me that across all divides, we have friends and well-wishers.”

Describing his wife, Oshiomhole said: “She is very humble, she appreciates the nature of my job and life that I return home late, some times 3am. She understands my weaknesses, she is more or less the mother of the house, the one that has accepted to be the mother of my children.

“I am happy that all my children are at home with her and accept her as their mother even though she is not old enough to be their mother. She has accepted to fill that gap” he said.

Nigerian incoming First Lady, Aisha Buhari made an interesting comment. She described Oshiomhole’s wife as beautiful and turning to her she said “but for you to marry a Nigerian, you need to cook Edi-Kaikon, Egusi, and other Nigerian delicacies. God bless the marriage and we know as First-lady you have a big task and God will guide and protect the family”.
