Buhari, Osinbajo to take 50% pay cut — Presidency

Buhari, Osinbajo to take 50% pay cut — Presidency

President Muhammadu Buhari will take only half of the salary paid to former head of state Goodluck Jonathan, his office announced on Friday.
“President Muhammadu Buhari will only receive 50 percent of the salary paid to his predecessor,” the head of state’s spokesman Garba Shehu said in an emailed statement.
“The president’s decision to take a 50 percent cut was conveyed to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation yesterday (Thursday),” he added.
The annual salary of Nigeria’s president is currently set at 14,058,820 naira ($70,000, 63,500 euros), including allowances, according to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
Shehu said Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo would also draw only half of his salary of 12,126,290 naira per annum.
The announcement comes as Africa’s leading economy faces the fall-out from the slump in the global price of crude oil, which provides most of Nigeria’s government revenue, and a public outcry over the remuneration of lawmakers.
His move is likely to add pressure on members of parliament and state governors to follow suit.
This week Buhari approved a package of measures to bail out cash-strapped states to enable them to pay public sector workers, some of whom have not received salaries since the end of last year.
Buhari has accused Jonathan’s government of leaving the treasury “virtually empty” while figures showed debts totalling some $63.5 billion at the end of March.
The 72-year-old is unusual among Nigerian politicians for eschewing the trappings of power and has earned a reputation for austerity, with apparently little personal wealth.
The former military ruler was said to have had to take out a bank loan to pay the fee to stand in his party’s presidential primaries.
Buhari defeated Jonathan in March elections — the first democratic transfer of power at the ballot box between political parties in Nigeria’s history

'I fear I will be arrested' - Man who abandoned his wife & twin babies say, wife reassures him of her love for him

Citizen Emeka Uche, the man who abandoned his wife Ruth and their three set of triplets says he is afraid to come out of hiding as he fears he may be arrested. According to him, frustration made him run away from his family after his wife informed him she was having another set of twins. Speaking with The Nation, he said;
"I love my children,  I miss my wife too, but I am afraid to come back. People won’t understand how frustrating life has been. I am scared I would be arrested if I come out. How do I watch my kids suffer? I could not tolerate it. I did not even have money to assist my family. I watched them suffer daily, without knowing what to do. There were nights I watched my children sleep without food. Some days I will buy N100 garri and akara (bean cake) for my family. Because of my low income, I was always in debt before the end of each month. I am a factory worker and I earn N33,000 after tax and union fees. Then I have four children and a wife to take care of, which has been very difficult,  I could not stand having a new set of twins that will come to this world to suffer. Initially, I thought it would be a child, probably a boy so that I would have two sons and three girls, but when I learnt it was twins again,  the only thing that came to my mind was to run away. It was not an easy decision and I have not been happy knowing that I abandoned them. My wife is a very good woman and I love her. I love my children too. I became frustrated when I called my brothers for assistance and they did not even answer me. I just dressed up that morning, I knew I won’t come back but I didn’t tell her so that she would not feel bad. I am pained that I have not seen my wife and children for three months, sister you won’t understand my situation, but know that it has not been easy for me,” he lamented on telephone, as he refused to disclose his location.”he said
His wife who was with the reporter while the telephone interview was being conducted reassured him of her love for him and that no one will arrest him saying anyone who arrests him will kill her first
"Please do not hang up the phone on me my heart. Just listen to what I have to say. I understand that things have not been easy but you should know that we have suffered alot. Please come back to me and your children. No one will arrest you because you are still my husband and I still love you. Anyone who arrests you will kill me first. Please talk to this aunt and also come so that we can go to Alausa together. They are all good people and mean well for us,”she said
Mrs Uche who received N200, 000 cash gift from Thisday Newspaper was at the bank to open an account and she looked at her three months old twin babies whose birth has brought her fortune and said
"You are a blessing to my family. What would have happened if I had aborted you? I would have just continued suffering with your brother and sisters and father”.she said

Man arraigned for allegedly raping mentally ill girl in Oshodi

A 33-year-old man, Itodo Stephen, has been arrested and charged before Oshodi Magistrates court for alleged indecent assault and having unlawful carnal knowledge of a 20-year-old mentally challenged girl in Oshodi, Lagos.
Stephen allegedly had sex with the victim (name withheld) when she was alone in their home at Alhaji Shehu Close, Oshodi, Lagos.
Stephen lives with the victim’s parents and was caught in the act by a neighbour who raised the alarm.
PM News reports that Stephen was charged with indecent assault by touching her private part and rape under the Criminal Code before Magistrate Akeem A. Fashola.
The incident happened when the victim’s parents were not around, whereas Stephen did not go to work on that day.
The victim’s parents were contacted and when they returned from work they reported the matter to the police at Makinde Division and the suspect was arrested.
At the station, he told the police that the victim did not resist him and that he did not force her as claimed by her parents.
However, the victim could not make statement to the police to determine whether it was actually a case of rape or not.
Stephen pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

Anambra Gov. Obiano Promises that Boko Haram Prisoners will be Relocated from State Soon

Anambra Gov. Obiano Promises that Boko Haram Prisoners will be Relocated from State Soon

BH-Protests
Following widespread protests in Anambra State over the relocation of some Boko Haram prisoners to state prisons, GovernorWillie Obiano has promised residents in the state that the prisoners will soon be relocated.
Obiano announced the news after a successful security meeting held with a 7-man delegation from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, on Wednesday, Pulse.ng reports.
“I want to reassure you that the meeting went very well. The various communities in Anambra, the markets, the car Unions, the churches, our traditional institutions and others made a great point to them that we want this people removed and removed immediately…they have reassured that they will take up our message back to Abuja and that this people will be removed very soon” Obiano said.
The security meeting was reportedly attended by traditional rulers, religious leaders, town union executives and market leaders.

Fake Doctor To Refund Nine-year Wage To FG - Photos

The fake doctor who practised with his friend's ID for 19 years was yesterday paraded in Abuja and the Federal Government has ordered that he returns all the money he earned for nine years to the pocket of the FG.

The FG has ordered the Departments of Finance and Accounts and Human Resources to do a thorough computation of what he had earned for nine years with a view to ensuring that he returns the money to the government’s coffers.

“The ministry is currently computing all salaries and allowances which was accrued to Ugwu during his mischievous sojourn in the ministry, for full retrieval by the relevant law enforcement agencies,” the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute, said.

Awute also said that since the fake doctor assumed duty at the Health ministry, he had passed only one promotion examination in 2013, which placed him on Grade Level 13 from Grade Level 12.

Ugwu was due to be promoted as Assistant Director in the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Health, before he was exposed.

Awute stated this on Wednesday in Abuja where the owner of the certificate, Dr. George Davidson Daniel, called on security agencies to protect him because his life was being threatened.

He also noted that Ugwu had collaborators in the ministry, adding that based on this, “we have sent another petition to the police to interview him to name his sponsors.”

The PS also emphasised that the ministry did not employ any of its members of staff directly, but through the Federal Civil Service Commission which has the statutory powers to do so.

Awute said, “Mr. Martins Ugwu Okpeh, who hails from Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, got himself employed fraudulently using the stolen documents of his childhood friend and best man, Dr. George Davidson Daniel, who has offered to appear at this press briefing to clear his name. Martins Ugwu was offered an appointment by the FCSC on August 30, 2006 and was posted to the Federal Ministry of Health in September same year.

“The surprising thing about Ugwu’s appointment is that he applied for the job on October 10, 2006. He was subsequently offered the job on October 17, 2006 and he applied for an identity card on the 19 of the same month.”

Contrary to the civil service regulations, controversial Martins Ugwu, who has been working since 2006 in the Ministry of Health using the name, Dr. George Davidson Daniel, was offered a job just a week after he submitted his application for employment.

Man disappears over wife’s third set of twins

Where  is Citizen Emeka Benjamin Uche, a Lagos factory worker?
That was the big question yesterday as his wife, Ruth, 34, from Abia State broke the news of his disappearance since February.
Uche, 39, fled home when he learnt that his expectant wife was carrying a set of twins – the family’s third.
Mrs Uche was at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa yesterday with her six children, pleading for help.
Not many knew what she wanted as she stood under a tree, close to the Press Centre, carrying the babies. Her first two sets of twins, much older, stood close to their mother, and did not in any way seem intimidated by the sea of cameras and faces focusing on them.
Mrs. Uche was receptive when  our reporter approached her to narrate her ordeal.
In 2009 when she first conceived, she was delivered of two girls – Goodness and Godnews. The second conception, two years later, produced another two – a boy and a girl, named John and Joyce.
But when her husband, Emeka, learnt that the third pregnancy was another set of two he fled their number 32, Awori Street, Agege home on the outskirt of Lagos to an undisclosed location in Ikorodu, Lagos.
The third set of twins arrived last month. They were named Daniel and Daniella.
Mrs. Uche said she could no longer cope with widening needs for food, clothes, drugs and school fees.
Her meagre earnings as a teacher in a private school in Lagos can no longer meet their needs.
Her story: “I met my husband in 2002 but we got married in 2008. We met in the village at Umuahia. I don’t want to leave the children and run away. This is why I want government to help us,” she said.
She recalled that she never wanted the third pregnancy, but her use of traditional means of family planning (counting fertile and infertile days) failed her.
“I was using traditional way of family planning where I calculate some days before having intercourse. It was working for me. You can see my first set of twins is four years old.
“You know as women, we cannot deny our husband that thing whenever they request for it. Whenever I mistakenly take in, he would say that I was pretending. Sometimes, I would go through long process to abort the pregnancy. After that, another one would happen. I would still have to go through the process again to abort it. When this one happened he still insisted that I was pretending until the pregnancy became obvious.”
“My Church was responsible for the payment of the first delivery. The church paid N120, 000 for the delivery of the first set of twins. The two deliveries of the twins have been through Caesarean Section for which we paid N120, 000 each. The last twins are through normal delivery”.
Mrs. Uche explained that her husband, a factory worker in Iju Road, Agege, has since refused to pick her calls. She learnt that he stays in Ikorodu.
“Since I gave birth to the children, I have tried calling my husband but he would not pick once he knows that it is me. I contacted his mother and other relatives to tell them that he has run away. They promised that they will call back. Since then, none of them has called me. It is not easy for me at all.
“I know only two of his relations. One of them lives in Ikorodu; the other one lives at Ajegunle. My elder brother, who could have also helped, is very angry with me for giving birth to another set of twins. He warned me before not to have any other child after the two sets of twins, especially with the kind of husband I have.
“I cannot put my hands in blood shedding by committing abortion. I want Nigerians to help me because there is nobody to pay their school fees.
“I went for immunisation some days ago and I told them my condition and why they have not been seeing me. It was there that they advised that I should come to government. Government should please help my children; no one to help me with house rent, electricity bill, school fees, food and so on,” Mrs. Uche said.

Toyin Johnson Cries ''Let Your First Instinct Be To Save A Life Not Snap Photos...''

These days when an accident happens, before the person knows what is happening, their pics have hit the social media..

Most times when breaking news happens, you see pics of people snapping away as if they are in a photography contest.....

Now let me ask you...Is it wrong to record a crime going on if you can and load it on the social media?

Is it right to also make pics of an accident scene with victims lying lifeless and helpless and load it on the social media?

Toyin Aimakhu-Johnson says

''It has come to my attention that people no longer take life seriously and as a concerned citizen, i feel it is high time we started a campaign or raise sort of awareness about the use of technology while others are literally in a life and death situation.

I witnessed a fatal accident between a large vehicle and a tricycle some weeks ago and to my utmost shock, people brought out their mobile phones and began filming the scene of accident. It was such a horrible sight to behold. I had to step out of my vehicle to bring them to an hospital nearby, with the help of others.
A Similar incident was posted a while back on facebook, and as a concerned citizen, i feel Nigerians are slowly loosing the ability to interact like human beings. Technology and internet is quickly replacing that natural instinct to help others in time of need, especially when we can do something to help in an accident situation...or save lives.

We are Nigerians and are cultured people with the best morals and orientation, we should not, in any way forget our roots, that before mobile phones, internet, ipad etc, there were proper and physical human interaction where our instincts tells us to help people out of a burning fire or from the wreck of collision of vehicles.

Do not replace life with technology, let us help each other before making videos or taking pictures and together, stand for what is right and cultured.

Let your first instinct be to save a life when you see an SOS situation and not to bring out your phone and start snapping. It is wrong!

Do what is right,please!''

Former Bayelsa Governor Timipre Sylva Withdraws Petition Against Ben Murray Bruce’s Senatorial Election

According to SaharaReporters, Former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, has withdrawn a petition he filed against Senator Ben Bruce at an Election Tribunal in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State.
Sylva, who was the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Bayelsa East Senatorial Seat, approached the State Election Tribunal to declare that the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Bruce was not qualified to contest the seat because he holds dual citizenship.
Sydney Ibanichuka, the counsel to former Governor Sylva, said the reason for Sylva’s withdrawal of the petitions was in the interest of peace saying he “has agreed to withdraw for the interest of peace in Bayelsa and Nigeria at large."
"I want to see the withdrawal as a personal sacrifice from their hearts. The petitioner secured the Tribunal's order to inspect the election materials. He also secured an order for forensic experts to examine the materials. They had a good case that bothers on irregularities in the election. The decision is a sacrifice."
At the hearing yesterday in Yenagoa, the presiding Chairperson of the State Election Petition Tribunal, Justice Ononeze Madu, said the Tribunal was committed to ensuring justice for the betterment of the citizenry and has accepted the decision of the petitioners.

Oshiomhole T0 Okonjo-Iweala: Explain The Whereabouts Of $4.1bn

Politics The war of words between Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State and the former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, continued, yesterday, with Oshiomhole challenging the former minister to explain what happened to the $4.1 billion she presented in her last report. Governor Oshiomhole also challenged the former minister to explain why she never published simultaneously what was accrued to the Excess Crude Account during the period she published what was distributed. The governor, who spoke on the state of the economy Channels Television programme monitored in Lagos, accused the minister of habitually playing around statistics. He said: “The decision to take money from the Excess Crude Account, if she had the power, the law should have been that power is vested in the National Economic Council, NEC. NEC is an institution created by the constitution. “What she was referring to is her own administrative arrangement. This $2 billion is the last sum, in her last report. She said we have $4.1 billion, she said so orally but it was captured in the minutes, only to come at the last minute to say oh ‘X’ is left. “If you ask her, what is it that she paid for on the strength of augmentation, that is to say, if they were augmenting, it means that even if there is a drop in price, they will take from the Excess Crude Account to make up the difference. “If they were doing that, you wouldn’t have the kind of situation we are in today where revenue drops by about 45 percent. I think, with all due respect to Okonjo-Iweala, she knows how to play around, (I don’t want to say, lie) with statistics. I have made this point that she kept open only part of the pages and not the entire book.
“The logic of transparency is that every minister must publish in full what is accruing to the Federation Account, month to month, and what is distributed to whom. What she has been publishing is what went to the Federal Government, each state government and local governments. “But she has never published simultaneously what accrued during the period, out of which this said sum was distributed so that you can get the net, what was distributed from all that was collected and see what is left in the excess crude. Now you can see her changing the goal post. “Okonjo-Iweala was a member of the National Economic Council. I was a member. I had asked her and I am on record as asking her, don’t give us verbal report on matters of Federation Account, give us written report.”

At least four people have been killed in South Korea in an explosion at a chemical plant in the city of Ulsan.
Owners Hanwha Chemical Corp said the blast happened during welding work to expand a waste water disposal facility.
"Gas from the waste water, which had piled up inside the tank, was apparently ignited by the welding torch", a fire official told AFP.
An investigation into whether negligence was the cause of the explosion is under way.
The plant makes polyvinyl chloride used in wide range of products, such as cling film.
